During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many people were holding seances performed by a medium. The practice became somewhat of a trend. This rise in popularity brought many scammers to the table who saw seances as an easy money-making opportunity. Vulnerable people make easy targets.
It wasn’t long before many of these scammers were exposed as fraudulent, but by then, much of the damage had been done and the practice of holding seances diminished in popularity. Today, most people still consider seances to be a form of theatre rather than an actual means of communicating with the dead.
