Can ghosts really turn on a flashlight?

If you’re a fan of television ghost hunting shows, then you’ve probably seen your team of favorite paranormal investigators set up flashlights on a table in hopes that a ghost or spirit will respond by turning the lights on and off in response to a series of “yes” or “no” questions. These are also known as “flashlight sessions”.

Many people, both in the field of paranormal research and those who are a bit more skeptical, have serious doubts as to whether ghosts are actually interacting with these flashlights. Skeptics claim that the flashlights are rigged.

Paranormal investigators unscrew the backs (or fronts) of the flashlights to the point where the light is teetering between on and off. Any slight vibration could cause the flashlight’s electrical connection to activate or deactivate. Investigators do this to make it easier for ghosts to use their energy to control the light.

Other explanations suggest that the light turns on and off in response to the heating and cooling of the light reflector as explained in this article.

Investigators swear they’re doing nothing to cause vibrations and that it’s the actual spirit who is controlling the light. This is the only way to explain the direct responses they get to the questions being asked.

Of course, as viewers, we see the flashlights turn on and off as if the ghosts were indeed immediately responding. But are they really? We have no idea what happened in the editing room. For all we know, the flashlight could have been turned on 20 minutes after a question was asked, and the editors removed the 19 minutes and 50 seconds of waiting. On television, we see that an immediate response was given.

Is it possible that spirits are actually interacting with these flashlights? Sure, it’s possible. Ghosts are a form of energy and should have the ability to manipulate energy. Is it also possible that ghosts have nothing to do with turning on and off these flashlights? Sure.

As for us, we would like to see a flashlight experiment conducted where the flashlight’s electrical connection is not manipulated so that it can’t be easily turned on and off with a slight bump. If spirits can turn doorknobs and move heavy objects, they should be able to turn on a flashlight switch without any help.
