Do Ghosts Really Say Boo!

Do ghosts and spirits really say Boo? It’s possible, but not likely. It’s quite true that most of us grew up watching cartoons and movies where the most common go-to scare tactic of ghosts was to say “boo!”. It makes sense that a spirit haunting a live performance such as a baseball game or Broadway play might say “boo”. After all, not all live performances are that great.

If ghosts can indeed communicate through voice, then they certainly have the ability to say “boo”. But why waste all that energy saying something that really isn’t going to scare anybody except for a group of 8-year old’s at a slumber party?

So where did Hollywood get the notion that all ghosts say the word “boo!” to try and scare us? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word “boo” originates from the Middle English “bo,” which was used as early as the 1500s.

However, the earliest record of the actual word “boo” being used in print dates back to 1738. According to the author at the time, the word “boo” was used as a way of frightening crying children living in the north of Scotland.

In the early 1800’s, it seems that people were regularly using the word “boo” to startle people, especially during the Autumn season when everything is a little more spooky. It’s also been noted that if you happened to get stepped on by a goose, you should cry out the word “boo!”, in order to scare the bird away. If you own a goose at home, you may want to give this tactic a try.

So it appears that the word “boo” does have an origin of sorts. It’s likely that the word has been used to scare people due to the fact that the sound of the word, if uttered properly and loud (and preferably while hiding in a closet or behind the shower curtain), can be somewhat startling.

The bottom line is this… If you’re on a ghost hunt and conducting an EVP session, don’t expect any spirits to try and scare you by shouting out the word “boo!”. Could it happen? Sure. But that would only be the case if your ghost was a Hollywood actor that once starred in a 1940’s Vincent Price movie (look it up kids). Or possibly, you just happened to catch a ghost while they were hanging out with their favorite goose.
