Haunted Hotspots in Tonopah Nevada

The town of Tonopah has a rich history. Tonopah (originally called Butler) grew up around the discovery of silver-rich ore deposits back in 1900. The story goes that prospector Jim Butler was searching for his burro who had wondered off when he stumbled upon an outcropping that appeared to be rich in silver. Word of the discovery eventually spread, and by 1901, the population of Butler had swelled to 250 and a post office was erected. The population grew to as many as 10,000 people over the next decade. Today, more than 40 historic structures still remain around town.

As with most mining towns of the era, Tonopah has had its fair share of ghostly encounters. Paranormal investigators come to Tonopah from all over the world to see if they can catch a glimpse of one or more of the town’s friendly spirits.

If you visit Tonopah today, you may want to check out these haunted hotspots.

The Mizpah hotel is reported to be one of the most actively haunted buildings around Tonopah. It is said that a beautiful lady in red haunts the 5th floor. Apparently she was stabbed and strangled to death there by a jealous ex-lover. There are also reports of ghostly children playing on the 3rd floor, as well as a few miners still residing in the basement.

If you pay a visit to the Old Tonopah Cemetery, you just may encounter something paranormal. People have reported hearing unexplained noises, seeing bizarre lights, and witnessing full-bodied apparitions. Walking tours of the cemetery are available for anyone who dares.

The Tonopah Liquor Company building located on Main Street was constructed in 1906 by the Tonopah Liquor Company. Today, it’s believed to be haunted by two spirits of the past. George “Devil” Davis, who apparently was a prankster in real life, and Hattie, who was a former brothel employee and barmaid.

The Tonopah Historic Mining Park Visitor’s Center is also believed to play host to spirits of the past. People have reported hearing voices. They’ve even captured a few strange things in their photos while checking out some of the buildings located on the property. People believe that one of the spirits haunting the visitor’s center is Bina Verrault, who was on the run from the law.

The World Famous Clown Motel in Tonopah actually has a clown theme. That’s frightening enough for most people. Oh, and it also happens to sit right next to the Old Tonopah Cemetery.

The Vanwood Variety Store, which sits in the original Nye County Bank building constructed in 1902 is also home to some strange happenings. People report hearing strange noises and voices, seeing bizarre lights, and witnessing other strange things. Some people believe that a previous bank employee who passed away in the old basement vault is responsible for the haunting.

These are only a few of the haunted hotspots of Tonopah. If you’re interested in visiting, Tonopah sits midway between Las Vegas and Reno, and only about a 3 hour drive from each city.
