Fargo, North Dakota has a rich history that dates back to its early settlement in the late 1800s. Originally a small frontier town, Fargo quickly grew into a thriving city thanks to its location as a major transportation hub. Fargo is full of great old buildings that are worth checking out and exploring if you get the opportunity to do so. They may not all be haunted, but they all have stories to tell. There are also a few places throughout Fargo that have a reputation for ghostly activity. We’ve listed some of them below.
Riverside Cemetery
Riverside Cemetery is an old historic cemetery located in Fargo along the banks of the Red River. It was established in 1880 and is the final resting place for many of the city’s once prominent citizens. The cemetery is home to a number of ornate and historic monuments, including the Veterans Memorial Wall and the Woodmen of the World monument. The cemetery is open to the public and welcomes visitors year-round.
For quite some time now, the Riverside Cemetery has been rumored to be haunted. If you don’t believe it, just ask the locals. There are many urban legends about hauntings in the cemetery and people claim to have heard the sounds of crying and calling out when nobody was around, especially in the areas near the mausoleums. People also claim to have seen strange mists, orbs, and other animalities, some of which have been captured in photos! Riverside cemetery is most definitely considered to be one of the creepiest cemeteries in the country!
North Dakota State University
North Dakota State University (NDSU) is a public research university located in Fargo, and boasts a student population of over 14,000. NDSU is known for its research programs, particularly in the field of agriculture. But that’s not all this historic university founded in 1890 is known for.
Legend has it that at least two buildings on campus are haunted by those residing in the spirit realm. Ceres Hall is one of those buildings. People claim that Ceres Hall is haunted by a man who hung himself from a heating pipe somewhere in the building. In addition, there have been reports of flickering lights and the feeling of being watched, especially in the basement and on the third floor. Minard Hall is also supposedly haunted. Rumor has it that a double homicide occurred at the site of the hall. People who enter the building tend to feel a sense of foreboding and uneasiness, as if tragedy had occurred in the building.
The Houston House - Bonanzaville
You’ll find the Houston House in a historic museum complex in West Fargo known as Bonanzaville, which is run by the Cass County Historical Society. The complex is made up of forty buildings on 12 acres, many of them are historic and from the region. These buildings have been moved to the museum grounds from their original locations. In addition to the Houston House, some of the other buildings include a saloon and hotel, schoolhouse, church, and a mercantile store.
If you do find yourself exploring Bonansaville hoping to perk up your spirits, be sure to check out the Houston House. Both museum staff and visitors to have reported hearing children laughing inside of the house in the middle of winter, when no children were present. In one of the bedrooms, it is claimed that David Henderson Houston Sr., former builder and owner died from a brain hemorrhage after becoming lost in a blizzard in 1906.
Trollwood Park
Trollwood Park in Fargo, is a popular community park that offers a variety of amenities and activities for visitors of all ages. But that’s not all the park offers. Over the past 50-years or so, there have been countless reports of people hearing and seeing things they can’t explain. And it should come as no surprise as the park was built upon the remains of two old county cemeteries. Of course the remains of the bodies were moved, but it is believed that some are still there. The county cemeteries provided a final resting place primarily for the poor, and the graves were not always well marked, if they were marked at all.
Some people claim to have seen the ghostly figure of a lady near a willow tree next to a large rock with the engraving of “County Cemetery #2. People also report hearing voices, being touched, and the feeling of being watched. If you find yourself on a moonlight stroll through Trollwood Park, don’t be surprised if you find yourself suddenly surrounded by some company!
The VIP Room Restaurant
The VIP Room in Fargo, is a popular restaurant that offers guests a unique dining experience via an eclectic menu. But perhaps there’s more to The VIP Room restaurant than meets the eye. Rumor has it that a number of staff members have reported seeing the strange figure of a woman wearing a veil in the basement of this historic 1894 building. However, they say that she does seem to be a friendly spirit, perhaps it’s because of all the great food?
Children's Museum at Yunker Farm
The Children’s Museum at Yunker Farm is one of the oldest buildings in North Dakota that is still standing, having been built in 1876. The building previously housed an interactive children’s museum which has since been closed. Of course, being such an old and historic place, there are bound to be a few ghost sightings tied to the property. One such sighting that several people have laid claim to is seeing the spirit of a young child standing next to a well near the building. It is believed that the child fell into the well at some point in the past. Some people also claim to see the ghost of Elizabeth Yunker (former resident) on the upper floor of the building. There have also been reports of doors and windows opening and closing with nobody at the helm. Fargo Theatre
One of the most famous haunted places in Fargo is the Fargo Theatre. Built-in 1926, the theatre is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former employee who died while working. Several people have reported hearing strange noises and feeling a presence in the theatre.
Although the city of Fargo isn’t on the world map of historically haunted, must investigate cities, it does indeed have a few scary stories to tell, for those willing to listen. The city has a rich history and much of that history still lies within the walls of the buildings that witnessed it.
