Hula Dancing for Seniors and Beginners
Hula is a beautiful form of dance that is unique to the Hawaiian Islands and is accompanied by chant (oli) or song (mele) which tells a story. The hula dramatizes or portrays the words of the oli or mele in a visual dance form, where the arms and hands do most of the talking. There are two distinct styles of hula dancing, hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula ʻauana (modern hula), with hula ʻauana being less formal and performed without ceremony. Hula can either be done while sitting or standing, and some dances make use of both positions.
