Is Concord's Colonial Inn Hotel Really Haunted?
Concord’s Colonial Inn in Concord MA is one of America’s most historic hotels. The original structure, still being used today, was built in 1716, and officially became a hotel in 1889. The inn is included in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the listed Concord Monument Square–Lexington Road Historic District. The inn has also been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2005.
The east section of the hotel which is known as the Thoreau House, was built by Colonel James Minot, grandfather of cabinetmaker Ammi White, who lived at the residence. Historians report that White was attacked and scalped by a wounded British soldier at the Old North Bridge with an axe. The house was sold in 1799 to John Thoreau, the maternal grandfather of Henry David Thoreau. It became known as the Thoreau House in 1889. Henry David Thoreau lived at the inn with his aunts between 1835 and 1837 while he studied at Harvard University
The Inn was a focal point of the Revolutionary War, when it served as a hospital for wounded soldiers. It has also been documented that the middle section of the main building stored arms and provisions for the Concord Minutemen in 1775. Some scholars also believe that British spy “John Howe” stayed at the inn in 1775, when he was tasked with locating the best route for an army to take between Boston and Worcester to destroy military supplies located there.
Reported Hauntings
Over the years, there have been reports of hauntings and paranormal activity at the inn. Not surprising given the age of the buildings and their association with the Revolutionary War. Guests have reported hearing strange noises, feeling cold spots, and seeing apparitions. According to Historic Hotels of America, guestroom 424 is reported to have the most unexplained and strange activity. This room is the most sought out for those interested in the paranormal. It is said that this particular room served as the operating room of Dr. James Minot, who treated patients during the Revolutionary War. Guests who have braved a night in this notoriously haunted room have reported some strange activity.
