Estimates are that the world is home to some 13 million native Hungarian speakers. Hungarian is most widely spoken in Hungary, where it is the official language, however the language is also spoken in parts of southern Slovakia, western Ukraine, central and western Romania, northern Serbia, northern Croatia, northeastern Slovenia, and eastern Austria. The U.S. has a small population of approximately 120,000 Hungarian speakers, which means that unless you live in a Hungarian community, you are unlikely to hear anyone speaking the language. With that being said, there are about 1.5 million U.S. citizens who classify their ethnicity as Hungarian.

Grammatical rules such as word order can be subject to change depending on who is doing the speaking, and words that appear to be identical can mean completely different things.
