I’ll admit, I have walked into many reportedly haunted buildings and felt a sense of heaviness. It was harder to breathe, and just didn’t feel quite right. The energy felt different. Having experienced this feeling of heaviness myself, I can understand why so many people feel overwhelmed when entering these locations.
I never automatically attributed these feelings of heaviness to the presence of a spirit or ghost being in the room with me. Of course it’s possible that I was in the presence of something otherworldly, but there’s more likely another reason.
One possible and obvious explanation for feeling heaviness in the air has to do with the age and ventilation of the building. Many old buildings are musty and lack ventilation. This is often the case with old abandoned prisons, theatres, and bars, where hauntings seem to be most common. The lack of ventilation can cause the air to feel heavier. The same is true for basements and attics in older homes.
