Why do Ghosts Wear Clothes?

When you think about it, it doesn’t make a lot of sense that ghosts always seem to appear wearing some type of period clothing. Why would ghosts and spirits need clothing? Do they have a desire to impress other ghosts? Are they bashful? Did they have a favorite go-to outfit? Or maybe it’s because there’s always a cold spot when they enter a room.

Unfortunately, we don’t know enough yet about the spirit world to understand why ghosts seem to be partial to clothing. In fact, we don’t even know definitively whether ghosts even exist. Assuming for the moment that ghost are real, doesn’t it make more sense for them to be naked?

Perhaps the reason why so many ghosts never choose to appear as a full-bodied apparition is due to the fact that they have nothing on. This may help explain why we only see images of ghosts when they are fully clothed. Note to any paranormal investigators, if you want a spirit to appear, bring an extra set of clothes.

Some of the more common outfits that ghosts seem to favor according to numerous sightings include a long flowing white dress, a soldier’s uniform (Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWII), Victorian era clothes, overcoat, miner’s clothes, and 1920’s clothes.

Some paranormal experts believe that spirits will appear to us based on how they best knew themselves. In other words, clothing that they associate most with their identity back when they were alive. For example, it they happened to be a big fan of disco, they could manifest as a full-bodied apparition wearing flared pants and platform shoes.

Other people believe ghosts wear the clothing that they died in. Since most people don’t die naked, it makes sense. This could also help explain why there are so many ghostly images of soldiers.

The honest truth is, we won’t know the reason why ghosts feel the need to appear in clothing. It would certainly take more energy for them to manifest an outfit. Especially one from the Victorian era where layer after layer of clothing was common.
