Why do Haunted Houses Always Have Those Creepy Dolls?

For whatever reason, it seems to be a requirement for all haunted houses to have a bunch of creepy dolls. Oftentimes, these dolls are stacked up in a closet, as if waiting for some unlucky investigator to pop open the door and pass out from fear.

We’ve seen it many times. Our favorite television paranormal investigators will be conducting a tour of a home along with the homeowners prior to the investigation. Along the way, we are treated to the presence of at least a couple of old creepy dolls dating back to the turn of the century.

And we’re talking really creepy dolls here. Sometimes they have only one eye, Their clothes are tattered. Their legs are stitched on backwards. You get the picture. Sometimes, they even have the old voice box that makes them talk, although the voice box doesn’t really function as well as it did 50 years ago and sounds extra creepy.

What’s most puzzling is that the homeowners seem to have no idea that these dolls are really-really creepy. The homeowners are afraid that their home is haunted, which is why they asked for the help of the investigators. Yet, they seem to have no clue that these dolls could be part of the problem. Why are they afraid of ghosts, but not afraid of their dolls?

Maybe the homeowners never got the message that the world is full of haunted dolls (or so we are led to believe). We’re not talking about “Chucky” here, since Chucky was just a movie character. There actually are real dolls that are said to be haunted. Some of the more famous ones include Annabelle who is a Raggedy Ann doll that currently sits in the Warren’s Occult Museum in Connecticut, Robert the Doll, who currently resides in Florida, and Mandy, who can be visited at the Quesnel Museum in British Columbia.

Doll phobia is a real thing. It’s called Pediophobia. A lot of us are conditioned to fear dolls. Maybe our parents feared them, or perhaps we watched one too many movies where the doll murdered our favorite unsuspecting actor. Some dolls creep people out just because they look too realistic. Pediophobia happens when people take the fear of dolls to a whole new level, where being anywhere near a visible doll will cause extreme anxiety.

To be honest, we have no idea why many houses that are reported to be haunted have creepy dolls. Perhaps, the owners like the vibe and enjoy all of the attention that their home gets as a potential hotspot for paranormal activity. Our advice is this…If you are a homeowner and are genuinely concerned and fearful that your house may be haunted, get rid of the creepy dolls!
